CBSE cracks down on ‘dummy’ students; 29 schools inspected across five states
New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted surprise inspections in a total of 29 schools across five states. An official said that schools in Delhi, Bengaluru, Varanasi, Bihar, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh were thoroughly inspected to identify ‘dummy’ students.
CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta said that a total of 29 teams comprising a CBSE official and the principal of the affiliated school inspected the schools. The Board has conducted the inspections on December 18 and 19, 2024.
CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta said, “Majority of the inspected schools were found to have violated the Board’s Affiliation Bye-Laws by enrolling students beyond their actual attendance records, effectively creating ‘non-attending’ enrolments. Additionally, schools were found to be flouting infrastructural norms of the board.”
He added, “CBSE has taken these violations seriously and is in the process of issuing show-cause notices to the schools found in breach of regulations. The Board is also considering legal action against the defaulting institutions.”
A total of 18 schools were found violating the norms in the national capital, Delhi. Three schools in Varanasi followed, and two each in Bengaluru, Patna, Ahmedabad, Bilaspur, and Chhattisgarh were found violating the norms.
The Board has also started the process of issuing show-cause notices to schools violating the rules. It is also considering to take legal action against the guilty schools.
According to official sources, these dummy students will immediately appear for the board exams without attending school. The dummy students will have the advantage of devoting more time to preparing for the engineering and medical entrance exams.
Many students prefer to stay in dummy schools considering the quota available in medical and engineering colleges in some states. For example, students who have studied classes 11 and 12 in Delhi are eligible for admission to medical and engineering colleges only under the Delhi state quota.
