Center orders to remove obscene content from Grok AI, seeks report within 72 hours
New Delhi, January 3, 2026: The Government of India has come into action mode due to increasing incidents of misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on social media platform ‘X’. The Central Electronics and IT Ministry has issued a strict notice to Elon Musk’s company ‘X’. In which orders have been given to immediately remove the obscene and objectionable content generated by its AI chatbot Grok and to submit the report of the action taken in this matter within 72 hours.
Over the past few days, misuse of ‘X’s’ generative AI chatbot ‘Grok’ was increasing alarmingly. By posting pictures of women on the platform, users gave instructions to AI to manipulate the pictures to make them obscene or provocative. This type of output hurts the dignity of women and is a flagrant violation of Indian laws.
The IT Ministry has clarified that the ‘X’ platform will have to immediately review its Grok AI technology. If the platform fails to stop this type of content, it may have to face serious legal consequences. The government has given the company three days to submit a detailed report regarding its review and steps taken.
In the last week of the year 2025 itself, the Ministry had issued new guidelines, in which strict instructions were given to social media platforms to remove obscene, adult or illegal content. “There will be no compromise with women’s safety and digital dignity. Platforms will have to accept responsibility to prevent misuse of their tools.” IT Ministry sources had said so.
These pornographic versions created by Grok are not only against Indian laws, but also against the internal policies of the ‘X’ platform itself. Even before this, there has been a conflict between the government and tech companies regarding deepfake and adult AI content, but this time the government has adopted a strict stance by giving a direct notice.
