Popular messaging platform Telegram Following complaints that unauthorized movies and web series were being shared on the platform on a large scale, the central government on Wednesday issued an official notice to the platform. The government has directed to take action against more than 3,142 channels on Telegram.

Center in action mode after complaints from OTT platforms

Major OTT platforms like JioCinema and Amazon Prime Video had filed a complaint with the government. The complaint alleged that their copyrighted premium content, movies and web series were being made available on Telegram for free without any permission. Taking cognizance of these complaints, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has issued a notice to Telegram under the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act).

3,142 Telegram channels were identified

After a top-secret investigation, government officials have flagged 3,142 Telegram channels. These channels were mainly used to share pirated copies of Bollywood, Hollywood movies and popular web series. According to the report, the hacking chain was carried out by taking advantage of Telegram’s ‘large files sharing’ limitation and the facility to hide the identity of users.

Already banned 5 platforms providing obscene content

The central government is currently focusing on cleanliness in digital media. A few days ago, the Ministry had banned 5 OTT platforms namely MoodX VIP, Koel Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Juganu for broadcasting obscene and indecent content. Besides, more than 25 websites and apps including ‘Ullu’ and ‘ALTT’ were ordered to be blocked in July 2025 as well.

What does the IT Rules 2021 say?

According to the Information Technology (Moderation Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules 2021, no online platform is allowed to publish obscene, pornographic, invasive of privacy or hateful content. Also, it is the constitutional duty of the concerned platform (Intermediary) to take action against content that violates copyright rules. This new action by the government is not only to curb piracy but also a big step towards bringing accountability and transparency to digital platforms.
