Centre’s big statement on reducing NEET PG 2025 cut-off, qualification of doctors will not be affected

There is a debate going on across the country regarding reducing the cut-off of NEET PG 2025. Now the Central Government has given its clear stand in the Supreme Court in this matter. The government says that reducing the cut-off will not affect the qualifications of doctors. The matter is currently under discussion during the hearing in the Supreme Court of India.

After all, what is the whole controversy?

The qualifying percentile for NEET PG 2025-26 session was reduced in the third round of counselling. A petition was filed in the Supreme Court challenging this decision.

The petitioners say that this may affect the quality of medical education. At the same time, the government argues that this is just an administrative process to fill the seats, it has no direct relation with the merit.

What argument did the central government give?

The government said in its affidavit that the purpose of NEET-PG is not to determine the minimum qualification to become a doctor. This work is already completed by passing the MBBS examination.

NEET-PG is only a method of preparing merit list for limited postgraduate seats. That means all the candidates are already licensed MBBS doctors, who have undergone rigorous studies and examination.

Why was it considered necessary to reduce the cut-off?

The Center argued that sometimes seats remain vacant. In such a situation, reducing the cut-off is an administrative step, so that the available seats can be utilized properly.

The government also informed that the cut-off has been changed several times since 2017. In the year 2023, it even went down to zero in some categories, but this did not have any negative impact on the medical system.

What was said on the safety of patients?

On the questions raised regarding the safety of patients, the government clearly said that this concern is baseless. All selected candidates are already registered doctors and eligible to practice independently.

During postgraduate training, they work under the close supervision of senior faculty and experts. That means there is no scope for negligence in treatment.

What will happen next?

Now everyone’s eyes are on the decision of the Supreme Court of India. The court is considering whether reducing the cut-off is in accordance with the rules or not.

At present, the Centre’s message is clear – the basic qualification of doctors has already been decided, NEET-PG is only a means of distributing seats on the basis of merit. In such a situation, there is no need to panic, but there is a need to understand the facts.
