Chahal praised Conley: Said- This 22 year old boy will become the discovery of IPL 2026
Mullanpur: Punjab Kings spinner Yuzvendra Chahal praised Cooper Connelly, who scored an unbeaten half-century in his debut match in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and said that this young Australian batsman will be the discovery of this season. Conley is currently 22 years old. He scored an unbeaten 72 to lead Punjab Kings to a thrilling three-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in their first match here on Tuesday.
Chahal said in the press conference after the match, “He is only 22 years old, but he has a strong desire to win. The way he performed in his very first match while batting at number three and played a match-winning innings shows how mentally mature he is.” Conley, who came to bat at number three, displayed great patience by holding one end despite the fall of wickets at the other end. Chahal said, “He understands the situation very well. He knows that he has to finish the match by staying till the end. This shows his maturity. This is a good sign for our team.
He said, “The way he is batting I think he will be one of the biggest finds of this season.” Chahal bowled well and took two wickets for 28 runs. He maintained the pressure in the middle overs and played a key role in restricting Gujarat to 162 runs for six wickets. Chahal said about his bowling strategy, “The wicket was a bit slow, so we did not want to bowl at a high pace. Our strategy was that if the batsmen hit long shots, it will be good for us.
Despite Conley’s brilliant performance, other key batsmen of Punjab Kings, Priyansh Arya (07), captain Shreyas Iyer (18), Nehal Wadhera (03), Shashank Singh (04) and Marcus Stoinis (00) could not leave any significant impact. Chahal, however, dismissed these concerns. “There are one or two matches like this every year, and we were lucky that the first match was like that,” he said. So there is nothing to worry about right now. The way we have been playing since last year, we will enter the field with the same positive energy and desire to win.
