Chakka jam in Delhi-NCR: Transporters’ strike from today
Transporters will go on a three-day strike from Thursday. This strike, proposed till May 23, may have an impact on the daily needs of the common people. There is a possibility of disruption in the supply of vegetables, milk, medicines and other essential commodities due to the operation of commercial vehicles being affected in Delhi, NCR and surrounding states.
The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has called for a strike in Delhi to protest against the increased green fee on commercial vehicles and the entry ban on BS-IV vehicles. The organization claims that 126 transport organizations from Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are supporting the movement.
Transporters say that vehicles will be parked wherever they are during the strike. They have warned that if the government does not pay attention to their demands then the agitation will be made bigger.
It is estimated that the strike may affect the operation of 25 to 30 thousand commercial vehicles every day. Of these, seven to 10 thousand vehicles transport essential commodities like food items, dairy products and medicines. In such a situation, if the strike is completely successful, its impact can be seen from the mandis to the retail market.
Transporters allege that the ban on BS-IV vehicles is being imposed without scientific basis and the increase in green duty is continuously increasing the freight cost.
