Champions League 2025-26: Atletico Madrid beats PSV 3-2; Greenwood powers Marseille to a 3-2 win
Atletico Madrid came from behind to beat PSV Eindhoven 3-2 away on Tuesday and moved up to seventh spot in the Champions League standings, all but ensuring its progress to the knockout stages.
Julian Alvarez, David Hancko and Alexander Sorloth all took advantage of some sloppy defending by their Dutch host to score after PSV had taken an early lead through Guus Til.
The Spanish side had to hold on desperately at the end as PSV came surging back when Ricardo Pepe pulled back a goal five minutes from time.
It set up a grandstand finish with a vociferous crowd urging the home side on, but despite several chances, PSV could not force a dramatic late draw.
Marseille beats Union Saint-Gilloise
Mason Greenwood scored twice as Olympique de Marseille came from behind to claim a 3-2 Champions League victory over host Union Saint-Gilloise on Tuesday, significantly boosting its chances of reaching the knockout rounds.
The win moves Marseille to nine points from six games and into 16th position in the league table. Union is 25th and outside the knockout places with six points, also from six matches.
Union took the lead inside five minutes when Anan Khalaili picked up the ball at the edge of the box, cut inside and drilled a low shot in at the near post.
Marseille was level as Igor Paixao reacted quickest to the loose ball when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s shot was only parried by goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.
Greenwood’s first goal put the visiting side in front as he linked well with Aubameyang and fired into the net from 12 yards, before adding a second when he blasted past Scherpen.
Union narrowed the deficit to a single goal when Khalaili grabbed his second and thought it had equalised on two occasions, but was fractionally offside on both.
