The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy has been mired in controversy as India refused to travel to Pakistan citing security concerns. India has proposed a hybrid model, under which its matches would be held in a neutral venue like Dubai, while the rest of the tournament would be held in Pakistan.
However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has rejected this suggestion and has insisted on hosting all the matches in Pakistan.
Reports suggest that the PCB may consider drastic measures like withdrawing from the tournament completely and boycotting matches against India. Such a move may force the ICC to either shift the event from Pakistan or reconsider the venue.
South Africa, once a potential alternative host, is no longer viable due to scheduling conflicts with the SA20 Cricket League. If Pakistan pulls out of the Champions Trophy then India becomes the top contender to host the Champions Trophy.
The BCCI has already raised security concerns and submitted a detailed report to the ICC, highlighting that India has not played a match in Pakistan since 2008.
Losing the Champions Trophy will result in a loss of approximately $65 million (₹548.61 crore) to the PCB. Meanwhile, a survey conducted by News24 on X revealed that 62.5% of the respondents supported India hosting the event.
This tournament will run from 19 February to 9 March, in which eight teams will participate. As tensions continue to rise, there remains uncertainty over whether Pakistan will retain the hosting rights or India will step in as the new host. Only time will tell the outcome.
