Champions Trophy: Jaiswal got a place in ODI, Bumrah included in the team but fitness became a headache.
Mumbai: Talented left-handed batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal was on Saturday selected in the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy while fast bowler Mohammed Shami made a comeback to the ODI team after a long time after recovering from injury.
Experienced Jasprit Bumrah is also named in the team but his presence will depend on gaining fitness.
Rishabh Pant and Lokesh Rahul will be the two wicketkeepers in the team. However, fast bowler Mohammad Siraj has not got a place in the 15-member team announced for the home ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy.
Shami has returned to the ODI team after the 50-over World Cup in 2023. Harshit Rana has been selected only for the England series.
“Bumrah has been asked to rest for five weeks and will not be available for the first two ODIs against England,” selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar said at a press conference here.
Despite scoring 752 runs in domestic cricket, Karun Nair missed a place in the team. “It was difficult to make room for one more player and the guys (batsmen) who have been selected have an average of more than 40,” Agarkar said.
Indian team: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Lokesh Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana (only for England series).
