PAN-Aadhaar Linking: In today’s time the need for Aadhar Card and PAN Card has increased a lot. If you fall under the income tax bracket and have not yet linked your PAN card with Aadhaar, then you should complete this task immediately. Last date is 31st December. After this your PAN card will become inactive, due to which you will neither be able to file income tax return nor get refund. The best thing is that you can easily do this work sitting at home. For whom is Aadhaar-PAN linking necessary?

If you file income tax or your PAN card is issued before October 1, 2024, it is necessary for you to link PAN card with your Aadhaar.

Important things for Aadhaar-PAN link

For online Aadhaar-PAN linking, you will need your Aadhaar card, PAN card and active mobile number. During the linking process, an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number, only after entering which you can proceed with the process.

How to link Aadhar-PAN card online?

  • For online Aadhaar-PAN linking, first go to the official website of Income Tax Department.
  • Click on the option of ‘Link Aadhaar’ in “Quick Links” on the home page.
  • Now fill your PAN, Aadhaar number and mobile number information.
  • After this, an OTP will come on your registered number, enter it and click on Verify.
  • Once verified, your PAN card will be linked to Aadhaar.

How to check Aadhaar-PAN link status?

Follow the procedure as follows to check Aadhaar-PAN linking status:

  • First of all go to the homepage of e-filing portal.
  • Click on the option of Link Aadhaar Status from “Quick Links” on the homepage.
  • Now fill your PAN and Aadhaar number.
  • If the linking process is complete, you will see a green tick mark.
  • If the process is not complete, you will see a message saying Verification is in process.

Check these things before linking PAN-Aadhaar

Whatever information is given in your Aadhar card (like name, address, date of birth and mobile number), the same should be there in your PAN card also. If there is a difference between the two documents, get it corrected first, otherwise you will not be able to link PAN with Aadhaar.

Why is Aadhaar-PAN linking necessary?

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it mandatory to link PAN card with Aadhaar to increase transparency in tax filing. Cardholders who have received PAN card before October 1, 2024, will have to link their PAN with Aadhaar by December 31.

CBDT had earlier given the last date for PAN-Aadhaar linking as June 30, 2023, which was later extended to May 31, 2024. If you do not get the linking done during this period, you may have to pay a late fine of Rs 1,000. So do proper checking and link your PAN with Aadhaar.
