‘Change the cyber environment in months, not years,’ intelligence alliance warns:

Read, Digital Desk : The Five Eyes intelligence alliance has made an unprecedented warning- warning of a radical change to the cyber landscape that will happen within months, rather than years, thanks to the next generation of artificial intelligence, according to the Daily Mail. Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance Issues Unprecedented AI Warning in Regards to Cyberspace in a Unique New Report in 2023. Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance Warns, “the cyberspace and information environment will change in months, not years” “If current trajectories remain, the development of this new generation of powerful artificial intelligence- systems, at least as of early March, are set to dramatically accelerate changes to the offensive and defensive cyber capabilities”.

A report released today in a joint statement from Five Eyes Intelligence Oversight and Review Council (FIORC) called on governments, businesses and corporate executives to prepare for an immediate change to cyber resilience.

The FIORC is composed of the heads of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and United States’ security and intelligence agencies. No specific companies or models are cited, but in its statement to members,FIORC called for prompt action. “We assess that systems we refer to as “frontier AI models,” or, more generally, the upcoming generation of very powerful AI models, will outpace current industry expectations by months, not years, in terms of enhancing the attack sophistication and scope of both offense and defense against the cyber domain,”FIORCsaid. Intelligence agencies noted that even though AI will enhance defenses, the risks posed by the emerging AI systems could have a greater, and more rapid, impact.

AI could provide for the potential to cause more advanced forms of sophisticated cyber threats such as the discovery and exloitation of vulnerabilities in days, rather than weeks or months, to exploit it.

According to Five Eyes, the amount of time it takes to identify and then weaponise vulnerabilities has decreased over months rather than years. “While AI will help over time to strengthen our defences, it also increases the speed, scale and complexity of cyber threats. We expect the most advanced AI models will far exceed industry expectations, and dramatically shift the capabilities for attack and defence in the cyber domain.”“

This shift is expected to occur in months not years,” the statement from theFive Eyesgroup added. “At the present time we know from security intel sources the current frontier AI systems outpace the present standards of our industry. It does not take years, months to adapt but it takes weeks and days”.

They continued to stress the importance of cyber resilience and that the new technologies will require organizations to “build strong cyber resilience for business success and economic value.

“I consider it imperative that you give this the serious thought that this demands right now in March”, said Five Eyes intelligence officers to government agencies. Five Eyes has cautioned that assuming cyber risks and current defence mechanisms may no longer be applicable in the next several months. As many corporate security managers have never considered or anticipated the potential impact that a company’s computer network might pose. As of today the five Eyes members have alerted all of their member nation businesses and corporations of imminent threat’s from some of the largest tech firms in the country.

Some are recommending that they consider cyber immunity as the best course of defence.

“Given the speed at which frontiers of AI are developing the risk landscape around cyberspace will transition from a matter of months and years to a matter of days and weeks,”FIORCrecommended. “If current trajectories remain, the development of this new generation of powerful artificial intelligence–systems, at least as of early March, are set to dramatically accelerate changes to the offensive and defensive cyber capabilities,” warned FIORC in a new release Tuesday morning. “Five Eyes: World Will Need to Adjust to Major AI-driven cyber risks within months”.

“The world should expect dramatic changes to our cyber ecosystem over the coming months. These powerful new capabilities pose a significant threat to organizations worldwide.” the message read.
