Chardham Yatra Alert: Why Uttarakhand is on Orange Alert This Week:
India’s weather map is currently a study in extremes. While the national capital is preparing for a much-needed break from the sun, several other states are bracing for a brutal week of record-breaking heatwaves and unpredictable storms. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of alerts across the country from May 11 to May 16, signaling a major atmospheric shift.
Delhi Gets a ‘Yellow Alert’
If you are in Delhi, keep your umbrellas and windcheaters handy. The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for today and tomorrow. After a hot morning, the city is expected to see light rain, thunder, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h by late afternoon. This sudden change is being driven by an active Western Disturbancewhich is expected to bring the maximum temperature down to around 39°C.
The Scorching West: Rajasthan and Gujarat
While the North cools down, the West is burning. Barmer, Rajasthanrecently recorded the country’s highest temperature at a staggering 46.8°C. The heatwave (Loo) warning remains in place for:
Rajasthan and Gujarat: Intense heat till May 14.
West Madhya Pradesh: Severe heatwave conditions expected.
Health officials are advising people to avoid going out during peak afternoon hours and to stay hydrated.
The North and East: Rain and Hail
The impact of the Western Disturbance isn’t limited to Delhi.
UP, Punjab, and Haryana: Forecasts suggest thunderstorms and light rain between May 11 and 14.
Bihar and Jharkhand: Residents should watch out for lightning and potential hailstorms in some areas.
The Hills: Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are all on high alert for rain and hail.
Uttarakhand Chardham Yatra Update
Travelers heading to the mountains need to be extra cautious. An Orange Alert has been issued for Uttarakhand. Authorities have specifically urged Chardham pilgrims and tourists to exercise extreme caution on May 12 and 13as heavy rain and unstable weather could affect travel routes in the high-altitude regions.
Heavy Monsoon-like Activity in the South and Northeast
Down South and in the Northeast, the rain is not letting up.
Northeast India: States like Assam and Meghalaya are bracing for heavy downpours and strong winds, especially between May 13 and 16.
South India: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka are looking at a week of consistent rainfall, with localized “heavy rain” warnings for several districts.
Whether you’re dealing with the dust storms of the plains or the rain in the hills, the message from the IMD is the same: stay informed and plan your travel carefully this week.
