Significant changes in banking regulations are coming into effect from 1 April 2026, which will directly affect ATM users. Several banks, including HDFC Bank, are revising cash withdrawal limits and transaction charges.

After these new rules, withdrawing money from ATMs will not be as cheap as before, so it is important for customers to be aware of these changes.

HDFC Bank new rules

HDFC Bank has decided to combine UPI-based ATM cash withdrawals with free ATM transaction limits. This means customers will be charged extra for every ATM transaction after the limit is crossed. The new rules will come into effect from April 1, 2026.

Under the new rules, customers will be charged ₹23 plus tax for each additional ATM transaction after the free limit is reached. HDFC Bank has set a limit of 3 free transactions in metro cities and 5 in non-metro cities. After this limit, this charge will be applicable on every transaction.

PNB reduced ATM withdrawal limit

From April 1, Punjab National Bank will lower the cash withdrawal limit on some of its debit cards. Under the new rules, customers could earlier withdraw up to ₹1 lakh per day. This limit has now been reduced to ₹50,000. This rule applies to select debit cards.

Apart from this, the bank has also reduced the daily withdrawal limit on some of its premium cards. Earlier, the withdrawal limit from these cards was up to ₹1.5 lakh. However, this limit has now been reduced to ₹75,000.

Bank also changed the ATM rules

Bank has also changed the ATM transaction rules for its customers. Customers will now be able to make only five free financial transactions per month at the bank’s own ATMs.

This limit has been reduced to three at ATMs of other banks. After crossing this limit, ₹23 will be charged for each additional transaction.
