ChatGPT for macOS now compatible with Apple Notes and other apps

ChatGPT app on macOS : OpenAI has introduced a new update to the ChatGPT app for macOS, making it now capable of working with many note-taking and coding apps.

In Gurba, the company announced on Thursday that its popular AI chatbot has now integrated with nearly 30 macOS apps, including Apple Notes, BBEdit, VSCode Insiders, Notion, Quip, and specialized coding apps like MatLab, IntelliJ IDEA, and PyCharm. This new feature, described by OpenAI as “agentic,” allows ChatGPT to access on-screen information in these supported apps and provide real-time assistance with users’ queries.

Available to paid subscribers

This feature is currently available only to paid subscribers of ChatGPT, including Plus, Pro, Teams, Enterprise, and Edu plans. However, OpenAI has assured free tier and Windows users that they will also be able to take advantage of this update next year.

Update announcement

OpenAI announced this update during its 12-day shipping event, in which the company released new features and improvements for its platforms daily. The announcement was made through a post on X (formerly Twitter) on the 11th day of the event. Kevin Wyle, Chief Product Officer at OpenAI, explained the feature in detail, emphasizing that ChatGPT can now work with nearly 30 macOS apps.

How does ChatGPT's new feature work?

After activating this feature, users can open any supported app and use the shortcut Option + Space. This opens a compact ChatGPT window on the app, in which the AI can see the same information the user is seeing on the screen. Users can interact with ChatGPT by typing their queries or using the advanced voice mode. For example, if a user highlights a particular part of text or code, they can ask ChatGPT, “How can I improve this?” or “What does this code do?” Chatbots understand the context and respond, giving users real-time feedback or clarification without interrupting workflow.

Agentic features and privacy

OpenAI calls this feature “agentic,” but the technology behind it is more vision-based. ChatGPT doesn't actually interact with apps—it can't write new text, edit code, or make changes to any existing content. Its job is only to give advice, which is based on the information visible on the screen.

Privacy has been an important concern for OpenAI. Users have control over when and which apps can access ChatGPT. OpenAI has also assured that the data collected during these interactions will be treated in the same manner as their conversation history.

With this update, macOS users can now take advantage of ChatGPT's capabilities to make their note-taking and coding tasks more effective and productive. This feature is especially useful for professionals who want to take the help of AI to increase their efficiency.
