ChatGPT is back after a long outage

Washington Washington. ChatGPT, one of the most popular Artificial Intelligence-based chatbots, faced disruptions this morning, leaving users unable to converse or access their history. Although OpenAI has not acknowledged the disruption, ChatGPT revealed that the disruption was caused by a “technical issue on a global scale.” At a time when ChatGPT was inaccessible to thousands of users, Downdetector showed a sharp spike in disruption reports, surpassing 3,000. Users have reported problems with other OpenAI services, including APIs based on its underlying models.

In response to a question regarding the disruption, ChatGPT replied, “The disruptions were due to a technical issue on a global scale, but the exact cause was not something that was fully disclosed.” According to the Internet disruption watchdog, 89 percent of the total disruptions were related to ChatGPT, while 10 percent of them were to the website. Only one percent of the outages were related to OpenAI's API.

Some users marked problems accessing websites like chatgpt.com and chat.com, while some others said that ChatGPT was not responding to queries when opening the website. “ChatGPT appears to be down at the moment,” said a user on DownDetector's forums, adding that they were seeing a “Web server reported a bad gateway error” message on the screen. ChatGPT's dedicated apps for Android and iOS are also currently unresponsive due to the outage.

While outages and service disruptions are common for Internet services, ChatGPT has experienced frequent downtime over the past few weeks. In December, ChatGPT suffered a massive outage in the US, which also resulted in disruptions to additional OpenAI services.
