Chatra: Police has carried out a big and successful action against drug trade in Chatra district of Jharkhand. In this joint operation, the police have seized illegal drugs worth about Rs 23 lakh, which include opium, doda and poppy seeds. This action was taken simultaneously in two different police station areas, which has exposed an organized network of drug smuggling.
Police have arrested one accused during this operation, while a case has been registered against several suspects and investigation has been started. The administration says that this campaign will continue to make the district drug free.
Action started on the basis of secret information
The police had received information from reliable sources that some people were storing huge quantities of opium and doda in their homes in Jordag village of Lavalong police station area. A plan was being made to supply these drugs further.
Considering the seriousness of the information, a special team was formed under the leadership of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Simaria. The team made a strategy and raided several locations simultaneously, due to which the smugglers did not get a chance to recover.
Rs 18 lakh recovered in Lavalong area
The raid conducted in Jordag village of Lavalong police station area proved to be an important success for the police. A huge quantity of narcotics were recovered from different houses here.
Police seized about 1.570 kg of dry opium from the house of Sakindra Yadav. Apart from this, two bags of Doda were recovered from Dhaneshar Yadav’s house. Seven sacks of doda and one sack of poppy seeds were also seized from the house of Rambali Yadav.
In this action, a total of 69.87 kg of doda and 25.850 kg of poppy seeds were recovered. Along with this, police also seized Rs 30,000 in cash and two Aadhar cards from the spot. According to preliminary estimates, the value of this entire recovery is said to be around Rs 18 lakh.
Police have registered Lavalong police station case number 34/26 in this matter and further legal action has been initiated under the NDPS Act.
Second major action in Kunda area, youth arrested
Under the same campaign, the police also conducted a separate raid in Margada village of Kunda police station area of Chatra district. This action was led by Kunda Circle Officer, in which the police team raided a house.
During the raid, police recovered 1 kg 12 grams of illegal opium. The market price of this opium is estimated to be around Rs 5 lakh.
19 year old youth Umesh Kumar was arrested from the spot. After preliminary interrogation, the accused has been sent to judicial custody. Kunda police station case number 34/2026 has been registered in this case and further investigation is going on.
Fear of organized network
According to police officials, preliminary investigation has indicated that this matter is not limited to individual trafficking only, but an organized network may be active behind it. The storage of large quantities of opium and doda in the villages indicates that this material was to be further transported to bigger markets.
The recovered Aadhar card and cash also strengthen the fact that this business was being conducted in a completely planned manner. The police is now busy identifying other members of this network.
Strict action under NDPS Act
Police have registered cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in all the cases. Under this law, there is a provision for strict punishment and heavy fine for the culprits.
Officials have made it clear that no person involved in drug trafficking will be spared, no matter at what level he is involved. From villages to big networks, action will be taken at every level.
Strict message from police administration
Simaria SDPO told in the press conference that the police is continuously running a campaign to make Chatra district drug free. He said that such actions will continue in future also and strict action will be taken against those involved in drug trade.
He also said that the aim of the police is not just to arrest but to destroy the entire network so that the youth can be saved from the clutches of drugs.
Growing concern at local level
After this action, concern about drug trafficking has increased at the local level. Illegal cultivation and storage of narcotics like opium and doda has been a serious problem for a long time in rural areas.
Experts believe that unless awareness and strict monitoring is increased at the local level, it will be difficult to completely control this problem.
