Chennai Super Kings can retain MS Dhoni as ‘uncapped’ player for INR 4 crore before IPL 2025 mega auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will have a chance to retain former captain MS Dhoni for just INR 4 crore for the Indian Premier League 2025. After the IPL Governing Council’s meeting in Bengaluru, the decision makers have decided to allow franchises to retain six players each with one being an uncapped player.

They also agreed to bring back a rule that allows teams to retain Indian players, who retired from international cricket, at least five years ago, as uncapped cricketers.

Ahead of the mega auction in 2022, Dhoni was retained as the second player by the five-time champions for INR 12 crore. Dhoni only plays in the Indian Premier League after retiring from international cricket.

In case CSK decide to retain the veteran wicket-keeper batter as an uncapped player, Dhoni would get INR 4 crore.

This rule was introduced in 2008 but was scrapped in 2021 after no franchise used it in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Dhoni had refused to confirm his participation in the 18th season before knowing the new retention rules.

He suffered an injury in the previous season but refused to rest. Dhoni also left the captaincy before the start of the edition earlier this year, with Ruturaj Gaikwad getting an opportunity to lead the side.
