Chess Olympiad: Indian chess team won gold in the open category, achieved this feat for the first time in history

India created history by winning the gold medal in the open category in the Chess Olympiad 2024. This is India's first gold in this tournament. Earlier, India had won the bronze medal in 2022. This tournament was held on home soil. At the same time, in 2014, the Indian team won the bronze medal.

India won a historic gold
The Indian team included Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, Pentala Harikrishna and Srinath Narayanan (captain). Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh won their respective matches and second-placed China lost two points against the USA, giving India the advantage and winning the medal. The Indian team had a great start to the competition. The team won its first eight matches before drawing with last edition's champion Uzbekistan.


India scored 21 points
Grandmasters D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggnanandhaa won their respective matches in the 11th round against Slovenia. World Championship Challenger Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi once again performed well in the crucial matches to help India win their first title in the Open category. In the match against Slovenia, Gukesh performed best in the technical phase against Vladimir Fedoseev with black pieces. Although he got a tough win, the 18-year-old Grandmaster adopted a brilliant strategy. Erigaisi defeated Jan Subelj playing with black pieces on the third board. After this, Praggnanandhaa came into form and won a brilliant victory over Anton Demchenko. With this, India won 3-0 over Slovenia with one match to spare. The Indian men's team scored 21 out of 22 points. The players played only a 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan.
