How to perform chhath Puja at home

If you are not going to the ghat at the time of Chhath Puja, then you can also perform puja on the terrace of the house. Before worshiping, keep in mind that whatever place you are going to worship, clean it thoroughly. First you have to worship Chhath Mata and then you can use a tub or bucket on your terrace to offer Arghya to the Sun. If there is a pond on your terrace then you can perform puja by filling it with water.

Swimming pool

If you live in a society, you can worship in the swimming pool there. To offer Arghya to the Sun, you can stand in this pool and offer water. Keep in mind that the water in the swimming pool should be clean.

If you do not have a swimming pool, then make a round shape with soil on your roof and cover it with bricks near it. Then you have to place a plastic sheet over it and press it inwards so that you can stand in it and do the puja. After this you will have to slowly pour water in it according to the round shape.

Chhath puja method
  • On the day of Chhath Puja, wake up early in the morning and take a pledge to observe Chhath fast without taking bath etc.
  • On the day of Chhath Puja, do not consume food for the whole day and observe Nirjala fast.
  • On the first day of Chhath, go to the river bank in the evening and take bath there and offer evening prayers to the sun.
  • To offer Arghya to Sun God, use only bamboo basket or soup bowl and offer Arghya with water.
  • Keep all the puja materials like fruits, flowers, vermilion etc. properly in the basket.
  • Along with this, also offer Thekua, Malpua and other items in the basket itself.
  • While offering Arghya to Sun God, keep in mind that all the ingredients should be kept in a soup or basket.
  • After observing Nirjala fast throughout the day and night, you should offer Arghya to the rising sun the next morning.
