Chhattisgarh: Big blow to Naxalism in Sukma, 29 Maoists surrender

Sukma: The ongoing campaign against Naxalism got a big success in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday. 29 Naxalites from organizations associated with the banned CPI (Maoist) surrendered before the administration and security forces. This development is being considered as a clear sign of weakening of Maoist influence in Darbha area.

Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan said that these surrenders have taken place under the rehabilitation policy ‘Pune Margame’ of the state government. He said that the recently established security camp in Gogunda area has had a decisive impact on the activities of Naxalites and the area is now gradually getting out of the Maoist grip.

Rewarded Naxalite also included among those who surrendered

Many important names are included in this group that surrendered. Among them was Podium Budhra, head of Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan (DAKMS), on whom a reward of Rs 2 lakh was announced. Apart from them, other members associated with DAKMS, Maoist militia and the so-called Jantana government were also included in this group.

All these Naxalites laid down their arms in front of senior police officers and CRPF officers and expressed their desire to return to the mainstream. According to officials, the guarantee of security, a dignified life and the hope of reintegrating into society motivated them to take this step.

Impact of new security camp in Gogunda

Gogunda area was considered a safe haven for Maoists for a long time. This area has been a strong center of Naxal activities under Darbha division. But the new security camp established here has changed the situation.

After the security camp, there were continuous anti-Naxal operations, search operations and permanent pressure in the area. Due to this, the movement, support system and local network of Naxalites became weak. Police officials believe that due to this pressure the morale of the Naxalites broke and a large number of surrenders took place.

Appeal to leave Naxalism

Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan also appealed to the remaining Naxalites to leave the path of violence and adopt a normal life. He said that the government is providing all necessary opportunities for rehabilitation, security and livelihood to those who surrender.

In recent times, incidents of surrender have been increasing continuously in Chhattisgarh. On January 8, 63 Naxalites surrendered in Dantewada district. On January 7, many Naxalites also appeared in Sukma. At the same time, till now in the year 2025, more than 1,500 people have left Naxalism in the entire state. Given the target of complete eradication of Naxalism by the Central Government by 31 March 2026, such surrenders may gain further momentum in the times to come.
