What is Vipassana meditation?

Vipassana is an ancient meditation technique, which means ‘seeing reality as it is’. It is a process of purifying the mind through self-observation. The purpose of this sadhana is to understand the root causes of mental unrest, stress and sorrow and get freedom from them. This is not a religious ritual, but a scientific and practical method, through which a person can achieve mental balance by looking within himself.

How did Vipassana start?

Vipassana practice started in India about 2500 years ago. It was rediscovered by Lord Gautam Buddha and taught to people. During the time of Buddha, a large number of people adopted this technique and achieved mental peace and balance in life. Later this sadhana spread from India to many countries including Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Thailand and brought positive changes in the lives of people there too.

How many days does Vipassana meditation last?

Usually the Vipassana camp is of 10 days duration, which is organized completely residentially. During these 10 days, seekers have to follow strict discipline, which includes silence, limited food, meditation and introspection. This process helps to gradually calm the mind and develop deeper understanding.

Why is this initiative special?

Mental stress has become a big problem in today’s busy life. In such a situation, a practice like Vipassana not only makes a person strong from within, but also helps him in taking better decisions and increasing his efficiency. This step of Chhattisgarh government shows that now the administration is taking mental health as seriously as physical health.
