China condemned Khamenei’s assassination: Said – it is a ‘serious violation’ of Iran’s sovereignty
Beijing: China strongly condemned the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying it was a “grave violation” of Iran’s sovereignty and security and called for an immediate end to the attacks on the country by the US and Israel.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also spoke on telephone with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov regarding the deepening crisis in Western Asia. Iran is a strong ally of China and Russia. China buys large quantities of oil and gas from Iran. “The attack and assassination of Iran’s supreme leader is a serious violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement on Sunday. “This violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms of international relations. China strongly opposes and strongly condemns it,” the statement said.
“We urge an immediate cessation of military operations, prevent further escalation of the tense situation, and make joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in West Asia and around the world,” it said. According to official media reports, Wan spoke to Lavrov at his request. Wang is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. “It is unacceptable for the US and Israel to attack Iran during the Iran-US talks,” Wang said. “Openly assassinating the leader of a sovereign nation and inciting regime change is also unacceptable,” he said.
