According to a report by The Guardian, the incident occurred in Hangzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where floodwaters caused by several days of heavy rain associated with Typhoon Maysak entered a snake breeding farm. Due to the flooding, many species of water snakes, including king ratsnakes and cobras, escaped from the facility and entered the surrounding populated areas.

Videos broadcast on Chinese state media showed snakes swimming in muddy floodwaters, with one clip showing a cobra raising its head above a fast-flowing stream. Local officials said that about 800 to 900 snakes escaped from the flooded fields. Officials confirmed the incident earlier this week, on July 7, and immediately urged residents to stay indoors, stay away from flood waters and report any snakes they see.

A villager told Beijing News that he was bitten by a cobra while removing debris from the ground floor of his house after the flood. Describing the snakes he encountered, the man, who was undergoing treatment at a local hospital, said, “I have seen five or six snakes.” A local doctor, who treats snakebite patients, told the publication that many villagers had sought medical care after the storm hit the area.
