China Lunar New Year Accident: A heartbreaking accident has come to light amid preparations to welcome Lunar New Year in China. Eight people have died tragically due to a massive explosion and fire in a firecracker shop in Donghai County, Jiangsu Province in East China. Two other people have suffered minor burns in this accident and have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Burning firecrackers wrongly became the cause of death

According to the official statement issued by the Donghai County Government, the accident occurred when a person was incorrectly bursting firecrackers near a shop. The sparks of the firecrackers reached the explosive material kept inside the shop, due to which the entire shop turned into a ball of fire. The administration has started investigating this matter.

Accident amidst celebrations and restrictions

In China, Lunar New Year is known as ‘Spring Festival’ It is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Bursting crackers on this occasion has been an ancient tradition, however due to air pollution in the past few years the government had imposed a complete ban on firecrackers in many cities. Recently, after some relaxation in the rules given by the government, there was a surge in the sale and use of firecrackers in the markets, due to which this tragic accident occurred.

Government issued strict instructions

After this incident, China’s Emergency Management Ministry has adopted a tough stance. The ministry has ordered strict monitoring of the production, transportation, sale and use of firecrackers to prevent such accidents from happening in the future in all areas of the country. Officials have been directed to ensure complete ban on bursting of firecrackers around shops and to avoid ‘blind spots’ Identify and improve security arrangements so that people’s Spring Festival remains safe and happy.
