28 people died in shoe factory fire, heart-wrenching video surfaced
China Fujian Shoe Factory Fire: A massive fire broke out in a shoe factory in Xinjiang, China on Thursday (July 9, 2026), in which 28 people died. The Emergency Management Ministry sent a joint task force to Xinjiang in East China’s Fujian province to help in rescue and relief efforts. The ministry said that the fire broke out at around 12:00 noon.
According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed officials to conduct search and rescue operations, investigate the cause and make every effort to hold those responsible accountable.
What did Xi Jinping say?
Xi Jinping said, “The cause of the accident should be found out as soon as possible, and those responsible should be severely punished.” There was a massive fire on the lower floors of the building, due to which people were running to hide near the windows and on the roof. The Emergency Management Ministry said that every effort is being made to extinguish the fire, find trapped people and treat the injured. According to Xinhua, some people were trapped and their contact was lost.
A campaign against fire hazards
China launched a campaign against fire hazards in high-rise buildings in November 2025, after 168 people died in a massive fire that broke out in several tower blocks in Hong Kong. Just a month later, 12 people died in a fire at a residential building in southern China’s Guangdong province, and now a massive fire has broken out at a shoe factory.
