Amidst the West Asia war, China stopped the export of jet fuel to Australia, a big crisis for the aviation sector.
China Stops Jet Fuel Exports To Australia: The ongoing fierce conflict in West Asia is now having a devastating impact on Australia’s aviation sector. China has suddenly completely banned the export of jet fuel supplied to Australia. After this decision, there is a danger of severe shortage of liquid fuel and increase in prices in Australia. Amidst this worldwide turmoil, clouds of crisis are now looming over Australia’s air travel.
China’s big step
China has ordered its oil refineries to stop the export of all types of fuel with immediate effect. The ban has affected the operations of at least two large oil ships coming to Australia. This step has been taken at a time when oil supply is quite unstable due to the ongoing war in West Asia.
Australia’s heavy dependence
Australia is completely dependent on imports of jet fuel for its needs as it does not produce it itself. In the year 2025, Australia will source about 32 percent of its total jet fuel requirement from China alone. According to Sydney Airport officials, now getting fuel from alternative countries has become a big challenge.
Concern about limited stock
By March 2026, Australia has only 29 to 32 days of jet fuel stock left. The country has about 802 million liters of fuel, which is enough for only a few weeks. Due to low stocks, serious consideration is now being given to giving priority to emergency and military flights.
negative impact on flights
Due to fear of fuel shortage, Air New Zealand has already taken a major decision to cancel 1,100 of its flights. Leading airlines like Qantas have also warned that ticket prices may increase significantly in the coming times. The possibility of fuel rationing at airports has increased, which could lead to drastic cuts in commercial flights.
danger in sea routes
The recent destruction of two transport ships in the Strait of Hormuz has increased the threat to maritime security. This region is the most important oil route in the world through which most of the fuel ships pass. News of Iran preparing to attack UAE ports has created more fear in the international market.
Looking for alternative sources
After supply from China stopped, Australia is now looking towards countries like India, Singapore and South Korea. However, these countries’ own supplies have also been badly affected due to the current conflict in West Asia. In such a situation, it is becoming very difficult for Australia to immediately arrange adequate fuel from other countries.

global emergency measures
In view of the increasing energy crisis, the International Energy Agency has released an emergency oil stock of 400 million barrels. This quantity is said to be almost double the stock released during the Ukraine crisis in 2022. Despite this, Australia is currently not in a position to provide international aid in accordance with its IEA commitments.
