China will build a dam in space, preparations for a huge solar energy project like Three Gorges Dam in space

New Delhi: China, which is building the world's largest dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, has now announced another big project in the field of solar energy. According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), this new project is being called 'Three Gorges Dam Project above the Earth'. It has been designed by China's famous rocket scientist Long Lehao. In this project, a one kilometer wide giant solar panel will be installed in geostationary orbit 36,000 kilometers above, which will continuously accumulate solar energy regardless of day, night and weather. According to Long, the size of the energy generated from this project would be comparable to China's Three Gorges Dam, which produces 100 billion kWh (kilowatt per hour) of electricity annually. The Three Gorges Dam is located on the Yangtze River in China and is so huge that NASA claimed that it affects the rotation speed of the Earth. “This project will be more significant than the Three Gorges Dam and the energy it will collect annually will be equivalent to all the oil that can be extracted from the Earth,” Long said.

These technologies will be needed

This will require super heavy rockets, due to which China will have to improve its space technological capabilities. Long said it would use two rockets—the CZ-5, which would be about 50 meters long, and the CZ-9, which would be 110 meters long. These rockets will be helpful in building space-based solar power stations.

This project will bring revolution

The idea of collecting energy from the Sun in Earth orbit and transmitting it to Earth has been a topic of discussion in scientific circles for several decades. Internationally, it is also considered the 'Manhattan Project' of the energy sector. If this project is successful, it can bring a major revolution in energy production and it can present a new model for countries around the world. Although no detailed information has been given yet about the cost and technical challenges of this project, China is taking serious steps in this direction.
