Chinese bride Ann Liu stuns in 13 couture gowns across multi-continent wedding celebrations

The couple first held an intimate civil ceremony in San Francisco on Feb. 21 before celebrating with 53 guests at a clifftop luxury resort in Greece on May 14, according to Vogue.

Vogue did not reveal the wedding’s cost, the couple’s net worth or their ages. But the scale of the celebrations, the high-end venues and Ann Liu’s 13 looks from Dior, Chanel, Valentino, Schiaparelli, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Di Petsa and Adrian Gan turned the event into a major talking point among fashion lovers.

Liu said she collaborated closely with each fashion house to create the 13 couture looks, complementing them with jewelry from her mother’s collection. She also worked with stylist Carrie Lauren Goldberg to select accessories, while makeup artist Nanase completed each ensemble with understated, natural-looking makeup.

“Haute couture is my language and the way I express myself without saying a word,” Liu said. She described preparing each look as designing a work of art, from selecting fabrics and buttons to adjusting every small detail for the perfect fit.

For the civil ceremony at San Francisco City Hall with family in attendance, she wore a Chanel haute couture dress in trompe l’oeil, a French print technique that creates optical illusions on fabric. She paired it with a custom Maison Michel box hat and a matching bag and Massaro shoes, both long-standing Chanel collaborators.

After exchanging vows, she changed into a Chanel tweed two-piece for cable car photos around the city, describing the colorful design as right for exploring San Francisco as newlyweds.

Liu said she and Zhu have loved Greek mythology since childhood and chose the venue to create a temple-like setting where they could invite friends and family into their story.

The decor was designed by Alice Wilkes Design with details evoking ancient Greek culture throughout.

At the intimate rehearsal dinner at Amanzoe, Liu wore a custom ivory gown by Valentino, the Rome, Italy-based house known for dramatic, sculptural eveningwear, which was designed to evoke a Greek goddess with a fitted silhouette and two long flowing panels.

At the welcome party, she switched to a cream Chanel gown trimmed with multicolored feathers. Liu spotted it at Matthieu Blazy’s debut haute couture show for Chanel in January and bought it the next day. The house had to fast-track production since a couture piece typically takes six months to complete.

The couple also held a Chinese tea ceremony honoring their heritage. There Liu was in two custom qipaos, the traditional fitted Chinese dress, by Singapore-based designer Adrian Gan: one in classic red, one in ivory drawn from Greek architectural motifs. Both were embroidered with the couple’s Chinese zodiac signs, those of their families and symbols tied to their personal histories.

On the main wedding day, Liu started in a 1996 archival Chanel haute couture dress and coat with an embroidered bow and then changed into a custom Chanel wedding gown with a mermaid silhouette, off-shoulder neckline, long train, the house’s signature back buttons and camellia lace, Chanel’s floral emblem since its founder Gabrielle Chanel adopted the flower in the 1920s. A long minimal veil completed the look.

Liu and Zhu were in a relationship for nearly nine years with intermittent separations. They met in 2017 at a noodle restaurant on the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles but did not speak until a mutual friend connected them later.

The two dated in their junior year, broke up but remained friends. After graduation, Liu worked in technology investment banking at JP Morgan while Zhu became a U.S. Navy officer. In 2024 he visited her in Shanghai, where she was working for her family business, and they rekindled the relationship long-distance.

Nearly eight years after their first meeting, Zhu proposed during a ski trip in Courchevel, France, on March 27, 2025, telling Liu they were going dog sledding before leading her up the mountain. She recalled the day was snowy and overcast until the moment he proposed, when the clouds parted and the sun appeared.

“This wedding was the perfect celebration of Brandon and my love, but it also reminded me how deeply grateful I am for the people in our lives. “It made me realize that what makes life meaningful is love, friendship, and shared memories. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to celebrate all of that together in one place.”
