Chinese Grand Prix: Why are McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri not racing today? Explained

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri faced major pre-race issues ahead of the Chinese Grand Prixputting both drivers at risk of missing the race start.

Norris had originally qualified sixthbut the British driver was unable to take his grid position during the pre-race procedure after a technical issue forced the team to bring his car back to the garage before the pit lane exit closed.

Technical problems before the start

McLaren mechanics were seen removing the floor of Norris’s car in the garage while attempting to diagnose the problem as the countdown to the formation lap approached. With the pit lane already closed, Norris would only be able to participate if the team fixed the issue in time, which would require him to start the race from the pit lane.

The situation worsened when Piastri’s car also developed an issue shortly before the startforcing the team to wheel the Australian driver back to the garage with an undisclosed problem.

With both cars undergoing last-minute repairs, McLaren risked both drivers failing to make the start of the race if the problems were not resolved quickly.
