Pant reaches sixth spot in Test rankings, Gurbaz in top 10 in ODIs

Dubai, Sep 25 (IANS) India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has re-entered the top 10 Test batting rankings after a long gap as the latest ICC rankings saw changes across formats, with many of the world's top players making significant moves in Test and ODI formats after a thrilling week of international cricket.

Pant's impressive performance in the second innings of India's win over Bangladesh in Chennai saw him move to sixth place in the Test batting rankings, earning him 731 rating points.

The wicketkeeper-batsman's compatriot Yashasvi Jaiswal has moved up to fifth spot with 751 points, having scored his half-century in the same match. Meanwhile, India captain Rohit Sharma remains in the top 10 despite dropping five spots to now sit at tenth spot with 716 points after his disappointing show against Bangladesh scoring less than 10 runs in both innings.

In the bowling department, Sri Lanka's Prabhath Jayasuriya caught the attention with his impressive performance in Galle. Jayasuriya took nine wickets against New Zealand, helping him move up five spots to eighth in the Test bowling rankings with 743 rating points. However, Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando slipped to 13th place.

On the batting front, Kamindu Mendis moved up to 16th position while Dhananjaya de Silva made his presence felt in the all-rounder rankings, moving up five spots to 18th. In ODI cricket, Afghanistan's rising stars made history. Young sensation Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit his seventh century before the age of 23 to jump 10 spots to eighth in the ODI batting rankings.

Gurbaz's rise is a significant milestone for Afghanistan cricket, as he became the first player from the country to break into the top 10 of the ICC men's ODI batting rankings. His stellar performance saw him surpass Australian batsman Travis Head, who reached ninth spot after scoring an unbeaten 154 in his debut ODI against England.

Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan also performed well, jumping eight places to third in the ODI bowling rankings after taking seven wickets in Afghanistan's historic series win over South Africa. Rashid's performance played a key role in Afghanistan's first ODI series win over a top five ranked team.
