Former Manchester United, Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane retires from football

New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and France international took to Instagram to confirm his decision, citing physical challenges, especially knee problems, as the main reason behind his retirement from the game.

Varane, who joined Italian club Como on a free transfer last summer after leaving Manchester United, was expected to miss a large part of the 2024 season due to a knee problem. In fact, Como did not even register him for their Serie A team after it became clear he would take a long time to recover.

Rather than continue to struggle back to fitness, Varane has decided to step away from the game, writing an emotional farewell letter to his supporters.

“They say all good things must come to an end. In my career, I have faced many challenges, proven myself on many occasions, almost all of which were impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime,” Varane wrote in his Instagram post.

Varane has had an illustrious career, including winning the World Cup with France in 2018 and four Champions League titles with Real Madrid.

Rafael's achievements include four Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, one World Cup, and numerous other domestic and international trophies.

With 93 caps for France, he was an integral part of the team for over a decade and was known for his leadership and composure both on and off the field.

The Frenchman, who has already retired from international football at the start of 2023, hinted at staying involved in football in a different capacity. “And so, a new life begins off the field. I will stay with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads,” he said.

“You represented our colours with great brilliance during your three seasons at Old Trafford. We thank you for your humility, leadership and commitment. Hopefully these qualities will serve you well in your next endeavour. Once a Red, always a Red,” Manchester United wrote on the post.
