Abhinav Bindra (English: Abhinav Bindra, born 28 September 1982, Dehradun, Uttarakhand) is a famous Indian shooter. He is the youngest player to receive 'Arjuna Award' and 'Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award'. Abhinav Bindra had created history by winning the gold medal in the 10 meter air rifle shooting competition at the 29th Olympic Games held in Beijing on August 11, 2008. He became the first shooter from India to win gold in the individual event at the Olympics. India won the gold medal in the Olympics after 28 years. Abhinav Bindra secured seventh place in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Abhinav Bindra was born on 28 September 1982 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. M.B.A. Abhinav is the CEO of a futuristic company. Abhinav Bindra, fondly called 'Abhi' by his family, had gone to Atlanta with his family to watch the Olympics in 1996. Then he saw the shooting range for the first time and felt attracted towards it. His family gave him full support to pursue this sport. He chose the air rifle competition after careful consideration and started participating in it. Abhinav Bindra first came into limelight on the world sports scene when he scored 700.5 points in 10m in the Munich World Cup in 2001. Won bronze medal in rifle competition. Abhinav surprised everyone by taking all the shots in just 44 minutes instead of the stipulated one hour and 45 minutes for taking 60 shots. In this competition, he was competing with 105 great players from 67 countries. He made it to the last eight players. Although he was ranked seventh then, he scored an incredible 103.9 points to finish third in the final. Due to this victory, he became the first Indian player to be eligible to participate in the men's singles competition in the Olympics. Abhinav Bindra says about his training that- “I practice for about 9 hours a day, out of which I practice shooting regularly for 7 hours and do exercises like stretching and jogging for two hours. After doing all this I am completely exhausted; But doing all this is very important. “A shooter’s ability depends on his ability to concentrate.” Abhinav has gained fame at a very young age and has won big awards at a very young age. His father has arranged for him all the shooting equipment so that he can practice thoroughly at home. He told- “I have an air conditioned range which is completely based on computer based 'Target Transport System' as per international standards. I have seven guns, bullets, jackets and other shooting equipment. Therefore, I am very satisfied in terms of facilities and accessories. Abhinav's parents have the greatest influence on his life. Their national coaches are Gabby Buellmann and Sonny Thomas.

Abhinav Bindra won ISSF in Rifle 3 Position Competition. World Cup, Fort Benning US By scoring 1161 in the competition, he equaled the many years old record of Subedar Subhaya of the Indian Army in 1999. Abhinav started participating in rifle competition only 2 months ago and this was his first world level competition in this category. Abhinav's coach at this stage was Stanislav Lapidus (Kazakhstan), who was earlier the coach of the Indian Army. Lapidus said- “In my 25 years of coaching experience, I have not seen a shooter like Bindra, who has performed so well in two months of practice.”(1)

Achievements

  • Abhinav Bindra created history by winning a medal in the 10 meter air rifle shooting competition at the Beijing Olympics on August 11, 2008.
  • Abhinav became the first shooter to win four consecutive gold medals when he won these medals in the Munich leg of the 2001 European Rifle Circuit Championships. Even after that, he continued winning medals in that competition and overall won 6 consecutive gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals.
  • In the year 2000, the International Sports Shooting Federation (ISSF) awarded him the 'Diploma of Honour'.

Abhinav Bindra believes that shooting should get the status of number one sport in the country, because this sport brings the highest number of medals in India.
