Persons with LMV license can now drive heavy vehicles i.e. Tata 407 or similar trucks. The SC allowed plying of vehicles weighing up to 7,500 kg or 7.5 tonnes. Now questions are arising in the minds of people that what is Light Motor Vehicle License? One category of license in the country is LMV, which means Light Motor Vehicle. People with this license can drive light motor vehicles like cars, jeeps. LMV license is issued for vehicles used for private purposes and not for commercial use.

What is Heavy Motor Vehicle License?

HMV i.e. Heavy Motor Vehicle category license gives permission to drive commercial vehicles like trucks and buses. People with HMV license can drive heavy vehicles. Also the driver has to fulfill the eligibility criteria to drive a commercial vehicle or public transport vehicle.

A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud delivered its verdict in favor of people holding light motor vehicle (LMV) driving licenses. The court said that there is no concrete evidence that LMV license holders are responsible for the increase in road accidents. In such a situation, now people with LMV license are allowed to drive heavy vehicles. The SC also asked the Central Government to expedite the process of amending the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1988.
