It is also called 'The Moon Lake'. This lake is at an altitude of 14,100 feet above sea level. Moon Lake or Chandratal Lake is so named because of its half moon-like shape. The water of this lake is very clean and clear. This lake is built on an island.

Chandratal is also said to be related to Mahabharata. It is said that Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, got angry and took Indra's chariot near this lake. After this, Chandratal was also worshiped for a long time. However, now people do not worship here, but do put up colorful flags. The lake has a diameter of about 2.5 km and is surrounded by vast plains. In spring and summer the grounds are filled with many plants and wild flowers. There is also an island in the middle of the lake, which is called Samudra Island. It is said that the Silk Road all over the world was developed because of this lake. This area of ​​the lake was once an important stopover for Tibetan and Ladakhi traders traveling to Spiti and Kullu. This lake is near Kunjam Pass on the border of Lahaul and Spiti valleys of Himachal Pradesh. Chandra river also originates from this lake. Further this river goes to Chandrabhaga and Jammu and Kashmir and joins Bhaga river and starts being called Chenab. This place with extremely cold climate is classified as a Ramsar wetland according to Köppen climate classification standards.

There is no visible source of water in Chandratal, although the way out is clear. It is believed that the source of water in the lake is from beneath the earth. Suraj Tal is about 30 km away from Chandra Tal. Chandra river originates from Chandratal and Bhaga river originates from Suraj lake. The best time to visit Chand Tal is from late May to early October. Its nearest airport is Manali. Chandratal can be reached by traveling for 7 to 8 hours from Manali via Rohtang Pass. The other route is the Kunjam Pass, which is a walking route. Chandra Tal is home to some species like snow leopard, snowcock, chukar, black ring stilt, kestrel, golden eagle, chaff, red fox, Himalayan ibex and blue sheep. Over time, these species have developed the physical ability to adapt to cold, dry climates and lack of oxygen. Migratory species like Ruddy Shelduck are found here in summer.
