Speaking to Filmfare in 1964, as written by Jerry Pinto in his book 'Helen: The Life and Times of NH-Bomb', Helen recalled that her family had left Burma in December 1941. . Because Burma was being heavily bombed by the Japanese. Helen further told that her mother packed some food items in a bag and went to the airport with her younger brother in her lap. There was bombing that night also. Frightened by this, they returned home.

Recalling the old days, Helen had told how difficult life had become for her in Burma. His stepfather was a British officer, who had already died. At the same time when some people from Burma had decided to come to India, his mother had also decided to come with them. She reached Dibrugarh in Assam after walking with all those people for about 9 months. During this time many people fell ill and many even lost their lives. Helen had told that her mother and she had almost become skeletons. His brother's condition was also critical. After reaching Assam, he spent two months in the hospital.

Helen had seen a painful scene
Recalling her childhood days in a television interview with Nasreen Munni Kabir, Helen had told that when she had passed through the places where the bombings took place, she had seen a lot there. She had told that when she was running away from home at midnight, she saw a place where a bomb had fallen. It was a shop and hair, blood and skull fragments were visible on the wall. It is noteworthy that Helen had come to Kolkata from Dibrugarh in Assam. After staying here for some time, he decided to come to Mumbai with his family.
