What does the study say?
In this study, online browsing habits of more than 1,000 participants were examined. The emotional angle of their searched web pages was checked. After this, all of them talked openly about their current mental health and condition. Researchers found that people who were experiencing symptoms of poor mental health browsed negative content more often. After viewing this content, their mood worsened and they had to search for more negative content to improve it. Professor Tali Sharot, who was involved in this study, said that these results make it clear that negative content can not only spoil someone's mood but can also bring many mental challenges.
How many hours do people spend on social media?
Out of the world's population of more than 8 billion, there are about 5.3 billion internet users. China has the highest number of social media users but Indians spend the most time on social media. According to research firm 'Redseer', every Indian internet user spends an average of 7.3 hours a day staring at the smartphone. Most of the time is spent on social media. Research shows that the more screen time, the worse is mental health. This can cause not only anxiety and depression but also many serious disorders. Research journal PubMed states that 70% of people use smartphones or remain busy on social media before sleeping.
