Kuldhara village, located 14 km from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, which has been deserted for the last 200 years, is one of the haunted places. It is believed that this village was established in the year 1300 by the Paliwal Brahmin community on the banks of river Saraswati. There used to be a lot of activity in this village at one time. But today the situation is such that no person is afraid of wandering here and this place has not been inhabited again for 200 years. Let us tell you some interesting things about this village.
History of Kuldhara village
Kuldhara village was originally settled by Brahmins, who migrated to Jaisalmer from Pali area and settled in Kuldhara village. It is said in the books and literary accounts of this village that Kadhan, a Brahmin of Pali, first built his house at this place and also dug a pond, which he named Udhansar. Pali Brahmins were called Paliwal.
Story of villagers disappearing in one night
According to popular myth, in the 1800s, there used to be a jagir or kingdom under the village minister Salim Singh, who used to betray the people by collecting taxes. The people here were very troubled due to the taxes imposed on the villagers. It is said that Salim Singh liked the village head's daughter and threatened the villagers that if they tried to protest or come in his way, he would start collecting more taxes. To save the lives of his villagers as well as the honor of his daughter, the entire village including the chief fled overnight. The villagers left the village deserted and went to some other place. It is said that while leaving, the villagers had cursed the village that no one would be able to live here in the coming days.
Wandering around in Kuldhara village
Kuldhara village is now a historical site maintained in a protected manner by the Archaeological Survey of India. Tourists can roam here and get to see glimpses of what happened during that time. Kuldhara region is spread over a vast area, consisting of about 85 small settlements. All the huts in the villages have been destroyed and are in ruins. There is also a Devi temple here, which is now in ruins. There are inscriptions inside the temple which have helped archaeologists gather information about the village and its ancient inhabitants.
Kuldhara Village Timings and Entry Fees
You can roam around in the village every day from 8 am to 6 pm. Since this place is considered haunted, the local people close the gates after sunset. If you are going by car then the entry fee for Kuldhara village is Rs 10 per person and if you are going by car then the fee is Rs 50.
Good time to visit Kuldhara village
This place, being in Rajasthan, remains extremely hot. So the best time to visit here is between October to March, where the heat gets a little hotter. You can enjoy walking in the desert without being bothered by the sun.

Kuldhara village is about 18-20 kilometers from the main city of Jaisalmer. So while traveling in Rajasthan, when you reach Jaisalmer, you can take a cab from the city. These cabs will take you to Kuldhara village.
