The idea of building a dam on the Jawai River came in 1903 because its flood waters during the monsoon had caused huge damage in Pali and Jalore districts. It was finally given shape in 1946. The objective of this project was to create a reservoir by building a dam on the river, which could be used for water irrigation and hydropower generation. The construction work of this dam started on 12 May 1946, which was completed in the year 1957. The construction of this dam was started under the direction of English engineers Edgar and Ferguson, although the construction of this dam of Azadi was completed under the supervision of Motisingh.
