AUS vs IND: Age, break and laziness… Why is Rohit Sharma's bat silent, Sunil Gavaskar told the reason
Cricket News Desk. Sunil Gavaskar has given the reason for Rohit Sharma's poor form. Gavaskar expressed concern over Rohit's slow reaction during the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne. The 37-year-old Rohit has been facing problems with his footwork, especially in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the fourth Test, the decision to open with Yashasvi Jaiswal and send KL Rahul at number three did not work for Rohit. He was out on the ball of Pat Cummins after scoring just 3 runs. Rohit tried to play a half pull shot on the short ball outside the off stump and was caught by Scott Boland at mid-on.
Rohit scored 22 runs in 4 innings.
The decline in Rohit Sharma's form is being attributed to his increasing age and break from cricket. Sunil Gavaskar has expressed concern over Rohit's lack of reflexes and footwork. He said that with age the body's reaction slows down and it takes time to regain rhythm after a break. In this series against Australia, Rohit has so far scored only 22 runs in four innings.
What did Sunil Gavaskar say?
Sunil Gavaskar, one of the most successful batsmen in Test history, said on Star Sports, 'He usually plays this shot. Half extend the front leg. I think he was confused about whether to play a full pull shot and then try to tap it as a practice catch. But this happens when you turn 36, 37 and take a long gap between playing cricket.
Sunil Gavaskar further said- This is why you are seeing that perhaps the footwork is not as per your expectations. As we age, the body begins to respond a little slower. The body doesn't just do what the brain tells you to do. So, it doesn't matter whether you are playing consistently at the age of 37 or not. Because you know your bat speed, everything. The moment you take a break, you have to be very, very careful and very, very conscious.'
