There used to be comparisons with Bumrah, now at the age of 24, his Test career is in danger, where has Shaheen Afridi gone?
Shaheen Afridi played the Under-19 World Cup for Pakistan in 2018. He made his international debut in the same year. He got a chance in all three formats. Shaheen soon became Pakistan's leading fast bowler. It was not easy for the batsmen to deal with the new ball. But now Shaheen's Test career seems to be in danger. After the South Africa tour, he is not part of the Pakistan Test squad even for the home Test series against West Indies.
Stayed out of 6 out of 8 test matches
Pakistan has played 8 test matches since the beginning of last year. Shaheen got only two chances in this. Now he will not even play two test matches against West Indies. This means that he was out in 8 out of 10 test matches. Sometimes due to injury, sometimes in the name of rest, he was kept out and sometimes he was not included in the team. The pitch of South Africa is suitable for fast bowling. Even after this, Shaheen was kept out of the team and he was also given NOC to play in Bangladesh Premier League.
Before the South Africa tour, there were reports that Shaheen Afridi himself had asked the selectors to rest him. However, he himself later clarified that he had not asked for any kind of relaxation.
There has been a huge decline in performance in the last two years.
Shaheen Afridi's Test performance has been extremely disappointing in the last two years. He has played 6 test matches since 2023. He has only 17 wickets to his name. During this period Shaheen bowled 217 overs. His average is 45.47 while his strike rate is 76.7. This means he is taking one wicket every 13 overs. In the first 20 matches of his career, Shaheen's average was 24.34 while his strike rate was 48. During this period he took 83 wickets.
Shaheen Afridi was injured during the Galle Test against Sri Lanka in 2022. He also got injured during the 2022 T20 World Cup final. His pace has slowed down after returning from injury. Even in ODIs and T20s, Shaheen is no longer as effective with more balls.
