Our body’s balloon-like bladder acts as a muscular storage tank for urine. When the storage is full, the brain gives a signal to empty it. Despite performing such an important function, the bladder does not receive as much attention as the heart or lungs. If urination is held in for too long, the bladder muscles can become stretched, and this can repeatedly reduce the bladder’s ability to empty completely. A research report by the universities of Puducherry in April 2019 suggests that stopping urination causes bacteria to grow rapidly, which increases the risk of urinary tract infection. It affects mostly women. Experts recommend emptying the bladder every three to four hours. Sometimes, holding urine for a long time can also cause damage to the kidneys.

An unbalanced diet and lack of physical activity can also harm the bladder. Being overweight increases pressure on the bladder and may increase the problem of leakage. Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight will reduce pressure on the bladder.
