The Central Government has decided to immediately ban the manufacturing and sale of all oral medicines containing more than 100 mg dose of Nimesulide drug. This ban will apply only to high dose (100 mg) nimesulide, while lower dose medicines will remain available in the market. Companies producing Nimesulide will now have to stop manufacturing high dose drugs.

The medicines which are already in the market have been ordered to be recalled. According to the Health Ministry, Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, which reduces pain, but its overdose carries the risk of liver damage.

Rules applicable from December 29

The government has ordered a ban on the manufacturing and sale of all oral medicines containing more than 100 mg of nimesulide. This rule will be effective from December 29. There is a risk of liver damage at high doses and safer alternatives are also available in the market.

Ban for animals also

11 months ago, the animal use of nimesulide was also banned. On February 20, 2025, the government issued a notification banning the sale of medicines. However, only high doses are banned for humans.
