True love and its experiences: a Kinsey Institute study

Magic of Love: Discussion of Valentine’s Week

During Valentine’s Week, talks of love and romance are heard everywhere. Couples plan surprises, gifts and memorable moments to make each other feel special. It is believed that true love is the most precious experience in life. Movies and novels often present ‘love at first sight’ or deep passionate love as the greatest achievement in life. But does love in real life happen only once, or does it come into our lives many times?

‘Kinsey Institute’ study

To find the answer to this question, America’s ‘Kinsey Institute’ conducted a comprehensive study. In this research, 10,036 single people aged 18 to 99 were asked how many times in their life they had experienced deep and intense love. The results busted many myths. According to studies, on an average a person feels deep and passionate love about twice (2.05 times) in his entire life. This means that most people only experience what they consider true and intense love twice in their lives.

Other findings of the study

The study also found that 14 percent of participants said they had never experienced such intense love. At the same time, 28 percent said that they fell deeply in love only once. 30 percent experienced this type of love twice, 17 percent three times and 11 percent four or more times.

According to Amanda Gesselman, the lead researcher of the study, people talk a lot about love, but this is the first time that an attempt has been made to scientifically understand how often such an experience occurs in life. According to him, passionate love comes only a limited number of times in most people’s lives and is not an everyday feeling.

Effect of age and gender

In this research, analysis was also done on the basis of age and gender. Interestingly, no major difference was found between the experiences of men and women. However, as age increased, people reported experiencing love more frequently. This indicates that love can happen at any age and there is no set limit for it.

These findings also help relationship counselors and psychologists, as it makes it easier to understand that deep passionate love does not happen again and again. In relationships, not only passionate love, but also friendship, trust, respect and understanding are equally important.

‘Match Group’ data

According to data from dating platform ‘Match Group’, 60 percent of single people in America consider themselves romantic. At the same time, 73 percent believe that movies and social media create unrealistic expectations about relationships.

So, if one has not found true love yet, there is no need to worry. Every person’s experience is different. Love can appear anytime, at any age and in different forms. It just needs to be recognized and cherished.
