Know the importance of star rating before buying AC.

Change in weather and need of AC

As the weather is changing, with the arrival of summer the demand for air conditioners has also started increasing. When we decide to buy an AC, the biggest question is whether we should buy a three-star model or a five-star model. Often, people choose AC looking at the price, but later regret it due to increase in electricity bills.

Importance of star rating

The star rating given on an AC reflects its energy saving capability. In India, this rating is determined by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). ACs with higher star ratings use less electricity, while those with lower stars consume more electricity. For example, a 5 star AC consumes less power than a 3 star AC, although its purchase price may be slightly higher.

Calculating star rating

Suppose, if a 1.5 ton AC runs for 8 hours a day and 25 days a month, and the electricity rate is Rs 8 per unit, the difference in star rating will be clearly visible on your bill. A three star AC consumes around 1.5 units per hour, which works out to around 300 units a month and a bill of around Rs 2400. At the same time, a 5 star AC consumes an average of 1.25 units per hour, which results in a monthly bill of around 250 units and around Rs 2000. From this it is clear that the change in rating can save about Rs 400 every month and about Rs 4800 annually.

How will the savings be achieved?

It is clear that an AC with a higher star rating may be a little expensive initially, but due to its better energy efficiency it consumes less power, which also reduces the running costs. Typically, its additional cost is recovered from power savings in 2-3 years, and beyond that it provides real savings over a longer period of time.

When to buy a 3-star AC?

If you use the AC for limited time, such as 3-4 hours at night or for a few months in a year, then a low-cost 3 star model may be the right choice for you. Its total cost of ownership remains balanced in case of limited budget and low usage.

When to buy a 5-star AC?

If you run the AC for around 6-7 hours daily or you live in extremely hot places like Jaipur, Delhi or Nagpur, then a 5-star model may be a better option for you. Running the AC for a longer period reduces power consumption and makes for an economically sound investment.

Things to keep in mind while buying

Often people make decisions while buying electronic goods only by looking at the price, whereas to take the right decision it is necessary to take into account the usage hours, local electricity rates and the possible usage period of next 5-7 years. So, when buying an AC, keep in mind that it is a long-term item, and by investing more initially you can save in the long run.

important rules

– If you use AC a lot, choose a 5-star model.

– If usage is less, even a 3-star model may suffice.
