Colorectal cancer awareness and prevention measures
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
New Delhi: The month of March is celebrated as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month across the world. On this occasion, Dr. Kartik Sahni, cancer specialist, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, has appealed to the people to be aware of cancer of the large intestine and rectum and get regular checkups done.
Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer
Dr. Sahni said, “Colorectal cancer is a silently attacking disease. In its initial stages, the symptoms are normal, due to which people ignore it.” He said that successful treatment of this disease is possible with timely diagnosis.
increasing cases at young age
According to Dr. Sahni, earlier this disease was seen more in people above 50 years of age, but now patients below 40 years of age are also being seen. He said that irregular eating habits, low fiber diet, processed food, smoking, alcohol and physical inactivity are the main reasons for this.
Pay attention to symptoms
It is important to pay attention to symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, persistent abdominal pain or bloating, unexplained weight loss, and prolonged fatigue. Dr. Sahni advised that if these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, immediately contact a gastro or cancer specialist.
need for colostomy
According to experts, if colorectal cancer reaches advanced stage, then first chemotherapy followed by surgery may require removal of a part of the large intestine or rectum. Dr. Sahni said that some patients have to undergo colostomy, in which a stoma is made on the abdominal wall and the stool is collected in a special bag.
Importance of screening
Dr. Sahni recommends regular colonoscopy after the age of 45. He said people who have a family history of colorectal cancer should be even more cautious. Screening can remove polyps before they become cancerous.
importance of awareness
On the occasion of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, experts have advised a balanced diet, regular exercise, abstaining from smoking and excessive alcohol. Dr. Sahni said, “This month reminds us that with timely testing and right information, we can save many lives.”
