How to take care of health during Navratri fast?

Health challenges during fasting

Keeping fast during the nine days of Navratri can become a challenge for devotees, especially in terms of health. It is often seen that as soon as the fast starts, people start facing the problems of constipation, gas and sour belching. The main reason for this is that they leave their usual bread and vegetables and suddenly start consuming heavy food items like buckwheat, water chestnut and sago. Due to this change, the body does not get time to adapt to the new diet, due to which the digestive system gets affected.

Effect of fiber deficiency and fried foods

During the fast, people often opt for fried dishes like Sabudana Vada or Kuttu Puri. These dishes are delicious, but they contain very little fiber. Lack of fiber makes it difficult to clean the stomach and increases the problem of constipation. Excessive use of potatoes and ghee during fasting in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR also increases acidity and heartburn.

Dehydration and effects of acid

Many people become so busy during the fast that they forget to drink water. Due to lack of water, toxins are not able to come out of the body, which slows down digestion. Apart from this, many people do not eat anything for a long time, due to which the acid level in the stomach increases. This increased acid can cause gas, stomach pain and headaches.

Ways to keep stomach healthy during fasting

If you want to complete the Navratri fast without any trouble, then increase the amount of fluids in your diet. Consuming plain water, coconut water, lemon water and buttermilk is beneficial. Instead of heavy puris, eat roasted makhana or boiled potatoes. Eat small amounts of food throughout the day so that acid does not form and make fruits and curd a part of your diet. Drinking a glass of lukewarm water after waking up in the morning and taking a short walk in the evening will keep your stomach light.
