Yogasana beneficial for mental health

Improving mental and physical health through yoga

New Delhi: In today’s fast-paced life, we often become so busy with our work, responsibilities and worries that we start ignoring our mental and physical health. This results in problems like stress, fatigue and restlessness. In such a situation, it is necessary that we give some relief to our body and mind. Yoga is a simple and effective way to get out of this situation. One of the many asanas of yoga is Shashankasana, which not only relaxes the body but also provides peace to the mind. Practicing this asana regularly helps in reducing stress and increasing energy.

Shashankasana means ‘rabbit pose’, where the rabbit curls itself up to escape danger. Similarly, by practicing this asana regularly, one feels relaxed and peaceful. The Ministry of AYUSH recommends doing this asana daily. It is helpful in reducing stress, anxiety and anger, and also helps in improving the lower back, spinal flexibility and digestive system. It is beneficial for health for children and adults.

It is very easy to do this asana. First, sit in Vrajasana (with legs bent and spine straight) on the yoga mat. Then, taking a deep breath, raise the hands upwards and slowly bend the body downwards. Now keep the forehead and palms on the ground. Sit in this position as per your convenience and return to normal position. You can repeat this asana for 10 to 15 minutes. However, do not practice this asana if you have severe back pain, high blood pressure, hernia or neck/knee injury.
