Ways to grow tomatoes and chillies
Growing trend of vegetable cultivation at home
New Delhi: Nowadays people are eager to grow fresh and chemical free vegetables in their homes. Red tomatoes and peppers, which are essential in every kitchen, are extremely simple to grow. With a little hard work and the right technique, you can get a good harvest on your balcony, terrace or even in a small garden. These plants grow well even in limited space and are ideal choices for beginners.
Proper soil and pot preparation
Well drained soil is essential for tomatoes and chillies. For this, prepare a mixture by mixing three parts of garden soil, one part of cow dung manure and some sand. The depth of the pot should be at least 12-18 inches and there should be drainage holes at the bottom. The pH level of the soil should be between 6 to 7, due to which the roots will become strong and the plant will remain healthy.
Method of sowing seeds and planting plants
Sow tomato seeds in nursery trays or directly in pots. Chilli seeds should be sown in a warm place. Cover the seeds with light soil and sprinkle lightly with water daily. 4-5 weeks after germination, transplant stronger plants into larger pots. While transplanting, plant deeply so that the roots can form well. Plant both the plants at a distance of 2-3 feet.
Sun, water and care
Tomatoes and peppers require at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Water in the morning so that the leaves remain dry. Water only when the soil becomes dry, as excess water can cause the roots to rot. Keep removing side shoots from tomato plants to allow the fruits to grow larger. Give light fertilizer to chillies when they flower. It is easy to prevent pests with regular monitoring.
Fertilizer and Nutrition Management
Mix cow dung or vermicompost in the beginning. When flowers and fruits appear, use neem cake or home organic fertilizers like banana peel and egg shell. Give nitrogenous fertilizer in the beginning and potash after the fruits appear. Apply light fertilizer every 15-20 days. Due to this the plant will remain green and red tomatoes and hot peppers will be available in abundance.
Pest Control and Harvesting
Spray neem oil to protect from insects. If leaves start turning yellow, check immediately. Pluck the tomatoes when they are red and the chillies when they are fully spicy and colourful. Regular harvesting brings new crops. With proper care, several kilos of vegetables can be obtained from one plant.
