How do cabbage and broccoli prevent cancer?

Green vegetables helpful in preventing cancer

If you frown after hearing the name of cabbage, broccoli or cabbage, then you should pay attention to this. Consumption of these vegetables can help in protecting from serious diseases like cancer. Recently, a study conducted by Britain’s Francis Crick Institute has found these green vegetables to be effective in preventing intestinal cancer.

Consuming green leafy vegetables like cabbage and broccoli is helpful in keeping the intestines healthy and reduces the risk of intestinal cancer. This information has come to light in a new research. In experiments conducted on rats, it was observed that rats fed a diet rich in indole 3 carbinol (I3C) had a reduced risk of developing intestinal inflammation and cancer. Cabbage and broccoli contain the presence of I3C, which activates a specific protein, the acyl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), thereby providing protection against intestinal cancer.

The AhR acts as an environmental sensor and signals the immune system and intestinal epithelial cells to avoid inflammation, as well as provide protection against intestinal bacteria.

“When cancer-stricken mice were fed a diet rich in I3C, they experienced a reduction in the number of tumors,” said Amina Meteji, leader of the research. This study has been published in the journal Immunity.

Walnuts also protect against intestinal cancer

In a study conducted by the University of Illinois in May 2018, it was reported that the fiber present in walnuts increases the number of ‘good bacteria’ in the intestine and reduces the production of bile and acids. This reduces the problem of swelling and irritation in the intestinal cells, which also reduces the risk of cancer. Therefore, consuming a handful of walnuts daily can be beneficial.
