Risk of cancer or not?

Increasing use of Bluetooth headphones

Nowadays, Bluetooth headphones and earbuds have become an integral part of our daily lives. These wireless devices are extremely convenient to stay connected to the mobile phone. But, an important question arises when using them: can the radiation emitted from them be harmful to the brain? Do they increase the risk of brain tumors or cancer? To address this concern, experts have clarified that Bluetooth devices are considered safe and there is no evidence of them causing cancer.

No scientific evidence related to cancer

According to Dr Professor Ishwar Chandra Premsagar, Head of Neuro and Spine Oncology Services, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, the radiation emitted from Bluetooth earphones is non-ionizing. These waves do not damage DNA nor break the cells of the body. Since cancer begins with changes in DNA, Bluetooth devices cannot be linked to cancer risk.

Bluetooth radiation less than mobile

Experts say that the radiation of Bluetooth earphones is much less than that of mobile phones. When we talk with the phone held to our ears, the body receives more radiation. In contrast, earbuds operate on much less energy. Till now no study has established a direct link between Bluetooth devices and brain tumors, so there is no need to worry about their use.

Effects on hearing from long term use

Although Bluetooth radiation does not increase the risk of cancer, prolonged use of earphones can have a negative impact on hearing ability. Experts recommend adopting the ’60-60 rule’, which means use at less than 60% volume and for no more than 60 minutes continuously. This rule is even more important for those who use earbuds for long periods of time for gaming or office work.

Precautions and symptoms of brain tumor

Do not use earphones while driving and where possible, talk on speaker by keeping the phone away from your ear. Experts also point out that it is important to recognize certain symptoms of a brain tumor, such as persistent headaches, vomiting, loss of hearing or vision, or changes in personality. If such signs appear, one should immediately get checked by a doctor, because a disease identified on time can be controlled quickly.
